"From its picturesque location at the end of Washington’s State Route 532, things are looking good at Camano Island Coffee Roasters (CICR). Founded in 1999 by Jeff Ericson and his nephew Dan, it all started with a one-pound roaster in a barn. Today, the company is doing business in 32 countries and as part of its recent ecommerce launch, signed contracts to sell its beans via Drugstore.com, Amazon.com, and Costco.com.
Back home in the Evergreen State, Seattle consistently rates at or near the top of the best coffee cities in the country. Washington is home to coffee giant Starbucks, and many other coffee companies, including Seattle’s Best Coffee, Moka Joe Coffee in Bellingham, and Camano Island Coffee Roasters, in Bailey’s district.

As consumers, we don’t always think about the impact of our purchasing power. How many times have you actually stopped to ask yourself,” Where was this craft, coffee, chocolate, or tea produced, and did the worker receive a fair wage for his or her work in the production process?
Some of the coffee beans grown by Hernandez and his neighbors in this mountain village are already showing up in Seattle cups. “I really like what Agros is doing,” said Jeff Ericson, owner of Camano Island Coffee Roasters. The company, which sells organic, shade-grown, freely traded beans, buys them from Agros-sponsored farmers in Nicaragua.
Camano Island businessman Jeff Ericson, owner of Camano Island Coffee Roasters and the 2005 Businessman of the Year, also feels like the communities work together and he appreciates the business Stanwood brings to the island. “Stanwood is a vibrant community,” Ericson said.
