… aka: Why you should purchase coffee from the Top 1%
Coffee is an amazing bean but it can harm your body. We make the audacious claim that “Your Coffee Could be Killing You” if you don’t purchase our coffee beans.
This is a 5 part blog series to inform and educate you.
5.) Carcinogens in Burnt Coffee
I know the first thing that came to many peoples’ heads when reading the title:
“I like my dark roasted coffee and I don’t want to hear another ‘coffee guy’ tell me to stop drinking it.”
Honestly, I do like lighter roasted coffee beans (note: not weak coffee, just lighter roasted beans – there is a difference). That’s another thought, for another day, however. The truth is, you can enjoy a well roasted Dark Roast Coffee without ingesting cancerous substances into your body. Dark doesn’t have to mean burnt.

4.) Chemical Decaffeination
While I’m not known for being a big consumer of decaffeinated coffee, there are times where it is necessary and if you have certain health issues, it’s crucial. Many people enjoy decaf coffee each and every day. For some, it’s an evening cup so they can sleep. For others, it’s all they drink.
There are two main things to be leery of when purchasing decaf coffee:

3.) The Negative Effects of Caffeine
Everyone loves a good pick-me-up to ‘get with it’ in the morning… or sometimes ‘keep with it’ in the afternoon. Caffeine is an amazing substance that really helps with that process. The problem is that more caffeine doesn’t necessarily equate longer periods of energy but many people chug different beverages all day for that “kick”. The Mayo Clinic says that 200 – 300 milligrams of caffeine per day is perfectly safe for most adults. They then go on to say that 500-600 milligrams of caffeine a day may cause insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, stomach upset, fast heartbeat, and muscle tremors. <source: mayoclinic.com>
So the question remains: How much coffee can I enjoy before I’m pushing the limit of caffeine I should add to my body?

2.) Shade Grown vs. Sun Grown
One comment we hear over and over again is this: “Your coffee is so smooth!”. In the coffee industry, smooth can be interpreted differently depending on what is being described. Typically, we hear it when someone is referencing the overall acidity of our coffee – that is, the acidity is really low and the flavor of the bean shines through.

The Aeropress is one of the many unique coffee items we have in our Holiday Gift Shop this year! It provides a modern way to make a delicious, quick cup of coffee! Whether you’re on the go or enjoying a quiet morning, this fast and efficient brewing method is growing in popularity. The Aeropress uses air pressure, total immersion, and micro-filtering techniques to brew that perfect cup of coffee. When using the Aeropress for your brewing method, the result is a coffee with a smoother body and lower acidity.
The Aeropress is a single-serve coffee press which requires a fine espresso grind and very little preparation time. To use your Aeropress for fresh brewed coffee, follow these simple instructions. Place the Aeropress directly on top of your coffee mug. Put a filter in the press and fill it with freshly ground coffee (usually 1-2 scoops or to taste). Next, pour hot water into the cylinder and stir. Allow coffee to settle for 10-30 seconds before pushing the plunger down slowly to extract the brewed coffee. Add steamed milk to make a delicious latte, or hot water for an enjoyable Americano!
If you would like to add an Aeropress to your next coffee order, or would like more information, visit our website!

According to the National Coffee Association, 80% of Americans drink coffee and 50% drink it every day. Over 500 billion cups are consumed worldwide each year, and more than 50 countries grow and export coffee. With so many people drinking coffee, it is important to ensure it is organically grown.
When it comes to coffee, organic is not just a buzzword or marketing gimmick. In many coffee growing regions, harmful pesticides and chemicals are used in the soil and on coffee trees. Many of these chemicals and pesticides are illegal in the U.S. and Canada. When used in the soil or on the trees, these chemicals can poison plants, animals and organisms that live in the soil and can be harmful to humans.
Here are several reasons why you should consider drinking organic coffee:
- Organic coffee is naturally grown without using harmful chemicals and pesticides, many of which are illegal in the United States.
- Growing produce using organic methods helps to prevent soil erosion and pollution. This helps keep nearby water sources pure and clean.
- Organic methods help create a cycle of social and environmental responsibility by teaching farmers a natural way to grow produce right from the very start. Coffee farmers receive higher prices for organic produce and can earn enough money to support their families.
- Organic coffee tastes great and does not leave a chemical residue on beans.
- Drinking organic coffee helps create a sustainable future by not polluting the soil and helping to create a safe and healthy work environment.

Boo Brew- Brazil Dark Roast
Our Boo Brew is back for October! This delicious dark roast is the perfect complement to a blustery fall day.
Bean Notes: Our Brazilian roasts are some of our best selling coffees. With bright, caramel tones and rich flavors, this coffee is a delicious addition to the daily routine.
Roast Notes: When our Brazilian Cerrado coffee is roasted to a darker level, the bean develops into a beautiful, dark chocolate color. Our Brazilian coffee is roasted at a higher temperature, allowing for a rich, smoky flavor to rise to the surface of each bean. This provides a similar brightness in the flavor, which also brings out rich, nutty tones.
Country Notes: This month our Boo Brew comes from the Cerrado region of Brazil. Cerrado means “closed” or “inaccessible”, and has earned its nickname from the closed canopy of the rainforest. This region has earned a unique reputation as being one of the few areas in the world where fire and the surrounding environment have found a way to co-exist. Fire is constantly purging the land and putting nutrients back into the soil, while the rest of the area continues to flourish.

I recently visited my long time friend and mentor Wilma, to help celebrate her 90th birthday! I began working for Wilma when I attended Northwest University nearly 30 years ago. Wilma was then the manager of Hickory Farms and taught me many valuable and inspirational business lessons. She also taught me to have passion and knowledge, which are very contagious traits.
Wilma often allowed me to borrow her red Chevrolet Camaro on weekends, which was one of the things that made her the best boss in the world. My wife Jodi and I spend time with Wilma on a weekly basis, and we continue to be great friends.
