So, if you’ve been here before.. again, welcome to CICR’s Blog! I, for one, am very excited about it! Allow me to introduce myself. I am Matt, the person behind the design and layout of our blog. I hope you like it! I am relatively new to my job as CICR’s “blog master” and as I’ve been learning more about coffee and my job, I felt like I should pass on some of my new knowledge to others who, like me, may not be “coffee guru’s” – yet they are in the process becoming more of a coffee snob.
Okay, so Coffee 101: Session 1 – Here is one term you will hear all throughout the ‘coffee world’
- SHADE GROWN -
Now you may have caught the drift that this is good thing, BUT what does it really mean and why do we at Camano Island Coffee Roasters sell only shade grown Coffee?
By growing coffee under the natural shade of the rain forest, our coffees are protected from the sun. Why is this important? Well, coffee that is not shade grown and exposed to the sun grows faster, tends to taste more bitter, and has a higher acidity. Our shade grown coffee grows slower and has a fuller body and more defined, well rounded flavor. Also, since we only buy fairly traded coffees, our farmers overseas make a premium for their coffee which more than compensate for the longer growth time required.
Until next time,
Matt – CICR
